Every workplace has them. Employees who shine a little brighter than the rest and take that extra time to go just a few steps further. Often, these employees are the humble quiet types who are less likely to carry a brag book with them and shout about their achievements. These individuals go about their days getting their work done and then some, but remain undiscoverable to their employers. How can employers identify their top performing employees, so they can reward them and advance them accordingly? Here are a few tips:

Listen

If you take the time to listen to your employees then you can often identify who the super stars are amongst the pack. Look for clues. When the team continuously mentions Tom is getting them out of a pickle, then it may be time to reward Tom for his continued efforts. This will ensure he feels as much value as he is bringing the company.

Work with Your Team

As an entrepreneur it is easy to get bogged down by the mundane day to day tasks of growing your empire, but it is important to take the time to walk around the office and work amongst your coworkers to notice key differentiators. Who is pitching in? Who is constantly on the phone drumming up new business? Is someone slacking off on social media all day? It is easy to determine who are the worker bees when you float amongst your team and tune in to your surroundings.

Weekly Check Ins

It is important to do weekly check ins with your staff so you know where you can support them. But also to help understand individuals strengths and see how over time, their efforts are adding up. Look for trends in these status meetings such as are employees hitting weekly targets? Are program deadlines being met? These continuous learnings will help you see over time who you can count on to get the job done.
